About this opportunity

The 2027 Mandela Washington Fellowship is seeking around 550 young African leaders for a six-week program in the United States. This is a great chance to develop your leadership skills and connect with American professionals.

The fellowship offers a unique experience at a U.S. college or university, where you'll share your insights and learn from experts. You'll also engage with leaders in business, technology, governance, and security, expanding your network and knowledge.

Participants will explore American innovation and culture, and join a global network of nearly 7,800 alumni. This is an unparalleled opportunity to grow your professional capacity and impact your community.

Who can apply

  • Ages 25-35 (exceptional applicants aged 21-24 may be considered)
  • Not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Eligible to receive a U.S. J-1 visa
  • Not an employee or immediate family member of U.S. Government employees
  • Proficient in English
  • Citizen and resident of an eligible African country (list provided in source)
  • Not a previous Mandela Washington Fellowship alumnus
