The problem
Fired clay bricks drive deforestation across northern Uganda, and building materials are too expensive for many families.
The solution
Interlocking blocks pressed from soil, a little cement and processed farm waste — no firewood needed. They are stronger, cheaper to build with and cut construction costs by up to a third.
Impact
- Saves an estimated 3 tonnes of firewood for every house built
- Creates jobs for local youth in block production
